The Healing Power of Laughter: Katie’s Vaguely Scientific Perspective

By Katie Eckerlsey | 11th Dec 2023 | Coaching, Mindset, Joyful Living, Abundance

Hello readers! First up, I’m no scientist but what I write about here is certainly scientific fact.  Actually, I do have a science degree but it’s in things like the physics of colour to get the right dye and how to program a computerised loom to weave a jacquard print. Fancy!

Today, I want to talk about laughter and the very basic scientific reasons behind its incredible benefits for mind and body.

I think Roald Dhal put it best in Twits when he wrote “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”

Laughter is a universal language that brings people together but it goes way beyond the moment of joyful expression. Scientists have uncovered a multitude of reasons why laughter is so beneficial to our overall well-being.

1. The Brain's Response to Laughter:

When we laugh, our brain releases a cocktail of neurotransmitters, including dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins. These chemicals are often referred to as the "feel-good" neurotransmitters, promoting an immediate sense of happiness and relaxation. This chemical release helps to reduce stress and anxiety levels.

2. Physical Health Benefits:

Laughter is like a mini-workout for the body. It engages numerous muscles, increases heart rate, and improves blood circulation. The increased oxygen intake during laughter stimulates vital organs, promoting better cardiovascular health. Regular laughter has been associated with lowered blood pressure, reduced inflammation, and a strengthened immune system.

3. Stress Reduction & Resilience:

Laughter acts as a natural stress buster. It decreases the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, leading to a more relaxed state of mind. By reducing stress, laughter can contribute to better mental health and resilience, making it an accessible and enjoyable coping mechanism in challenging situations.

4. Social Bonding and Connection:

Laughter is a social behaviour that plays a crucial role in building and strengthening relationships. Shared laughter creates a sense of camaraderie and fosters social bonds. In group settings, it acts as a powerful social glue, promoting a positive, cohesive atmosphere. This social aspect of laughter contributes significantly to our overall mental well-being.

5. Cognitive Benefits:

Engaging in laughter stimulates brain activity and creativity. It encourages a more optimistic and open-minded outlook, enhancing problem-solving skills and fostering a positive mindset. Additionally, laughter has been linked to improved memory and cognitive function, providing long-term cognitive benefits.

While being a delightful expression of joy, laughter is a powerful tool that positively impacts our physical and mental health. From reducing stress and promoting heart health to enhancing social connections and cognitive abilities, the science of laughter reveals its multifaceted benefits. So, the next time you find yourself in need of a mood boost, consider indulging in a good laugh – your mind, body and probably those around you, will thank you!

Love & Light,
Katie xx
