What To Expect From Coaching

What to Expect from Coaching?

Specifically coaching with me, Katie Eckersley.

Expect the unexpected. Frankly most days I don’t know what to expect from my own brain or mouth. Welcome to the world of neurospiciness in midlife. ADHD, yep, migraines, yep, anxiety, yep. Overwhelmed because modern life is so utterly overstimulating and your hormones are up the wall? Dear Lord yes!

First up, coaching is not therapy.

Even the word can sound daunting can’t it. Oh for crying out loud which can of worms am I going to up when I sit in the therapists chair? You’re then met with a sympathetic head tilt and a gentle hum of agreement! Dammit I need someone to tell me what to do that’s actually relevant to daily life.

As a coach I won’t really tell you what to do either but I’ll ask you the right questions to help you see what’s going on and what needs to happen. You’ll even see that you’re already capable. Your nervous system is probably overloaded and your  life is full but perhaps just not full of the right things.

Coaching is super practical. I spot patterns, habits, energy, boundaries…and choices. We then learn how to live with your brain and body rather than feeling at war.

We look at your real life and make it calmer, simpler and more enjoyable because I imagine if you’re here reading this then your brain feels like it has 47 browser tabs open, you’re not sure where the music is coming from and you can’t even remember why you picked your phone up?

What next?

Yes you absolutely know you need help with your nervous system regulation, your habits, your wellbeing and your mindset but you just can't quite get it all to work and it feels like such a long list.  As your coach I’m here to work out which bits to keep and which bits to get rid of, accountability, no judgement, no pressure, no perfection. Have you seen the state of my house?!

You'll start with a free discovery call to see if we're a good fit or if it's coaching you really need. Sometimes I might recommend you to seek a therapist or a different specialist before starting our coaching together. Sometimes we can leap right in. Everyone is different.

You then book in 1, 2 or 4 sessions a month for a minimum of three months. You get voice note access in between for when you just need to let it all out!  Again, no judgement, no pressure, no 579 step plan to overwhelm you even more.

During our sessions you talk, I listen. Really, properly listen. I see the patterns going on underneath. We look at your average week and find out what's working and what's not. No 5am get ups to meditate. Sleep is a priority. Are you getting the basics in? Moving your body, fresh air, whole foods...all leading to good sleep? These are your priorities especially when you live with ADHD. I think everyone needs that really...

You then go away and try what we've talked about. If you don't, that's not failure, its a question for the session - what’s getting in the way or holding you back and how do we adjust?

I suggest 12 weeks to start with as this is the length of time we need to build new habits that actually work for us. It's not an Instagram "transformation" because no one is transforming in five easy steps! No glamorous retreat to Bali (sorry!), it's showing up every day for yourself and doing things differently, learning about yourself and your brain and how to work with it. Slow and steady - ironic really given that we ADHD folk feel mostly urgent! When I was little apparently I would shout “NO, not later! RIGHT THIS MINUTE NOW!”. Feisty!

How has coaching helped me?

I’m not sure I can put into words how much coaching truly helped me so instead of over thinking it let me give you some examples.

It gave me the confidence to join Tropic Skincare and not be swayed by what everyone else thought, it gave me the confidence to join a comedy writing workshop having wanted to for years, it gave me the confidence to become a coach myself and not listen to that inner voice that said ‘why would anyone want to be coached by you?’. That inner voice was so wrong, I have so many beautiful client testimonials.

I went to my first coaching session feeling completely overwhelmed, living with constant migraines and anxiety, wading through life. Coaching eventually led me to my ADHD diagnosis, understanding why I felt like I did, giving myself grace. The best bit? The medication stopped the migraines. I had lived with ‘chronic daily migraine’ for over 25 years. The anxiety would sometimes be so bad I would throw up. All while trying to parent three young children. It was hell.

Coaching gave me the accountability to make small, consistent changes that built up over time. It isn’t a magic wand, it takes discipline, compassion and commitment to yourself.

Time to sort your sh*t out?! I’ve got you. Book in a free 30 minute session: https://tidycal.com/kecoaching/book-your-discovery-call-with-katie
